Bike Interview with Accessories Designer Silke Jacobs

1. Tell us about bySilkeJacobs?

The idea for my namesake line of bags and accessories came about 3 years ago when I started sewing again to make fun and practical bags for myself and friends. After a few months of experimenting and creating my own designs, I realized how much I enjoyed the process and decided to open up an Etsy shop. As the orders kept coming in, I expanded my brand, collection, and customer base. My current collection includes a wide variety of accessories ranging from coin purses and pencil pouches to shoulder bags and totes.

2. Where is your favorite destination for a bicycle ride?

Now that I live upstate New York, most of our bike rides are on quiet country roads surrounded by fields. We love to explore new roads where we can spot old farm houses, little creeks, or amazing views of the Catskills. Our little dog, a chihuahua named Bear, comes along for the ride in his basket and takes it all in. I love these rides as they remind me of my childhood in Belgium, where I would hop on my bike and ride for hours with my family on breezy summer days.

3. Does your bike have a story?

My previous bike was a 1972 Schwinn that I purchased from the original owner at a garage sale. When I found the bike, it was nearly 40 years old yet in mint condition – the woman even gave me the original manual! Unfortunately, this bike was destroyed when hurricane Sandy hit our building at the time. I had been looking for a worthy replacement ever since when this past spring, I came across this single-speed, back pedal brake Vista. It rides so smooth and the deep green color matches my bike basket perfectly.
4. What is your favorite restaurant?

Merrick Sushi & Tea in Long Island, NY. I love sushi, and when my husband and I first moved in together, we often met up at this restaurant after work to talk about our day. It’s a very small and cozy restaurant, and the staff is very nice. We still go out of our way to stop by there when we are in the area.
5. Who is someone you admire?

My mom. Growing up, she perfectly managed the balance between work and home life. Even though she always worked full time, we still spent a lot of time together, and everything was always taken care of. She’s also an avid gardener, sewer, and DIYer. There’s nothing she can’t fix, dress up, or solve! I get my creativity and drive from her, and strive to match her work ethic every day.
